Instancing / Forest Pro

Hi

Just wonder how to best add / create trees in a project?

I have a tree (testing TreeMaker by 3dArcStudio) and would like make a lot of copies.

If I rightclick and select Octane Proxy then I can select .obj and .ocs files, but I never use the standalone version.

Is there an other method for creating plants like we can do with Forest Pro for Max?

I guess instancing could be used, but the manual is quite sparse regarding this.

Thanks :-)

hi, Jorgensen =)

Yeah, You can use Phantom Scatter
http://render.otoy.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=33791

this small program will allow to make scatter data based on Your scene geometry & then You use the provided CSV in OctaneStandalone to scatter proxies =) whether it's grass or trees, whatever - could be dust particles in the air if You wish =)

Hi Glimpse

I don't use the standalone version.

I prefer the plugin for 3ds max, and now I give the plugin for Sketchup a try :-)

Hi Jorgensen,

You can create a high-poly tree or any other object in Sketchup end then use Plugins -> Octane -> Export to .ocs while having OctaneViewport opened and then reuse it via OctaneProxy context menu.

Hope that helps

Hi,
I have written 3D Tree Maker and using it a lot with Octane
With previous versions of Octane (1.5) here is how I handled this :
- export one instance of the complete tree as a unique obj file
- place all your instances with 3D Tree Maker
- use Octane Scatter Data from components to create scatter file
- copy paste scatter file to scatter item into Octane
It worked very good, but long work if many different tree types.

I just bought Octane 2 and Sketchup Plugin, and will make tests to find how to define simpler solution.

Congrats to the octane team for this SU Plugin.
Build a quick tree on grass to test.
Did not export anything, just clicked on render, and it work.
1st test show that geometry transfer used the component def of SU, so this image was created by Octane almost instantly, even with grass.
They made what I dreamed of since the first version of Octane.
Thks again!!!!

Hi fuzzybro

I have tried using your method "Octane proxy > from .obj" and it works fine.

Just one thing. If I use a .obj tree, and find out it's to small I hoped that I could scale the sketchup component, and thereby scale the proxy. But this seems to have no effect on proxies.

Is there a way of modifying proxies or do I have to recreate the .obj file?

Still learning - Thanks :-)

Hi mate!

Good to hear you liked the feature :)
As for the scaling, that's strange. Proxy should reflect all the changes that you make to the Sketchup component. Check the attachment.
How do you create the proxy? It might be that you are scaling different component (that is nested inside the component that is actually connected to .obj file in Octane)

Cheers!

Is this working for 3ds Max?
