It works fine, but you need to get 4 identical cards, like 4 GTX460 2GB if you want to render large scenes, or 4x GTX480 if you want to have more speed.

An ASUS workstation class motherboard has 4+ PCI-E sockets, eg, the ASUS WS extreme for example.
You will also need a 1200+ watt power supply, depending on the other components in your machine...

EDIT: these are cheap gaming type boards, not expensive server type boards and use standard core2 i7 CPUs, not dual or quad xeons etc...

Radiance

You need to make sure you have enough pci-e slots of at least 4x speed for the 4 cards and these cards are 2 slots wide so they need to be spaced accordingly. There are only a few mobo that fit that description and they are expensive workstn ones.

Now that's a monster mobo! :o
I wasnt aware that there were any duals that had 4x pci-e 16x. 48gb of ram too!
Just the thing for 3x 6gb Tesla + a Quadro... $$$$ even too much... :)
I see they make a i7 model too. $400 instead of $600 8-)

that was used in maximum pc build for 2010. those xeons are more expensive then the entire system i'm thinking about:
asus sabertooth x58, 8 gigs ddr3 1600 ocz ram,7 920, dual msi 460s (1 gig), corsair 850 psu, osz vertex60 gig boot drive, etc
