Hi, I found my iMac too slow to use Octane (normally I need to render simple scene but with HQ texture, and for high resolution image output) so I want to buy a new PC. Could someone tell me if the specs below are good?
  • - Motherboard: ASUS Z87-KC2
    - Processor: Intel Core i5-4440 3,1 Ghz Haswell
    - RAM: 16 Gb Crucial DD3
    - Graphic Card: Asus GTX 770 2 Gb
Thank you
K.

seems ok, but the if You're going to 770 gram 4GB model..why? for high resolution You need vRAM - I don't remember exactly, but like 8K square will use 2+ just reserved for image + You need some extra space for geometry & textures..

If You work for print (need bigger resolutions) & use complex models, lot or higher res textures take 4 (670,770) or even 6 GB models, like TitanBlack or upcoming GTX 780 6GB.

As for mobo - it's ok for one/two cards, but if You are going to use only one card, take MATX or even mITX (if You don't need 32GB of RAM) If You step for ATX format it's better to look for different board & capable case that You would have a possibility to upgrade later, adding third or even fourth card..

Planing upfront I'd buy bigger PSU too..so You don't need to thow out "old" one later..if Yu decide to add extra cards. 16GB seems not a perfect solution either, unless You buy two sticks only.. so You could add two more later (otherwise in case of 4x4 You'd have to thou them out if You need more later)

If You're not in a hurry. Just wait a bit & grab 6giger (780), that soon should be available on the market =) for 1.2k on the rig (spending half for main component) is a good choise (& You'll have 3x more of Vram than You've planed). Integrated GPU will benefit too as system will be way more responsive if You plug screen to iGPU =)
