Instances and VRAM

Hey Guys
Probably a rookie question, but I have to ask it.
I got Laubwerk Plants generator. It creates great looking plants. Than I've put it into "cloner" and made a grid of 8 X 8 trees (64 trees as a result).
It hardly fitted in my 3GB GPU...
So after seing some animations with huge loads of trees and grass I have a question:
Is there any method of instancing which does not duplicate geometry? Or does it work in the way that never mind if using cloner or any other instancing method - duplicating this way any geometry just duplicates geometry and Octane sees it as any other geometry?
I just don't understand how do people create such complex scenes and run it on 3GB or 4GB GPU's???
