I would like to know if I use
Nvidia® Geforce™ GT 330M, 1GB Graphics
Intel® Core™ i5 460M (2.53GHz base, up to 2.8GHz, 2C/4T, 3MB L3)
3GB (1X2G+1X1G) DDR3-1066MHz SDRAM, 2 DIMM
Would octane be fast enough on this laptop?
Thanks in advance for any advice

Hmmm the 330m has 48 cuda cores and its probably about GT220 level..
It would be 'ok' for Demo 'experiments' perhaps, at small pic size.
It will run but it wont be very satisfactory.
The display will lag a fair bit and it will be fairly slow to render.
Something like a 460m with 192 cores would be preferable however IMO you would be better off with a pc rather than a laptop for Octane.

thanks for the advice
If I get a desktop instead,
512MB PCIe x16 nVidia Quadro FX580, DisplayPort,DVI Capable
Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-750 (2.66GHz,8MB)
4GB, DDR3 non-ECC SDRAM Memory1333MHz, 2X2GB
But when I check the FX580 have even less cuda cores (32 cuda cores) and lower memory
Even FX1800 would only have 64 cuda cores
Would it be better if I get Geforce GTX 460 instead - 336 cuda cores with 1GB (GTX 470 and above too expensive for me)
One more concern is will the lack of processor and low memory (4gb) make it slow to render?

I would suggest investing in a gtx480 instead. The memory limit will not be a major issue anymore in future releases coming in a few months...

Well thats interesting news to casually drop in the forum.
You mean I just bought the wrong card??
Can you give an indication of how much more efficient it will be so people can plan their hardware appropriate to their needs please.

If some people only need a 480/1.5gb instead of a Tesla/3gb they might appreciate knowing about it. $$$...

Sorry but i can't divulge our internal development roadmap / research on our public website...
I hope you all understand...
But rest assured, you did not buy anything you won't need

In light of comments above i would suggest 2x 1gb gtx460's using a minium 650 watt high efficency power supply and a 2xPCIE V2.0 x16 bit slot motherboard.that would make 662 cuda cores - 10% (you normally get a ramp up of +90% when using a 2nd Card) for the job.I would have suggested the 2GB models but looking that these other comments, maybe 1GB models may be sufficent in future.Failing that, start with the above components less one of the cards and see how it goes.If you need more speed then purchase the 2nd one.As long as you have initially made enough allowances for a suitable Power supply and enough PCIE Slots to expand into then you could start with one and see if you need more as you go.Processor is not overly critical an Intel I3 or AMD Phenom X4 would be more than adequate, and of course 2-4GB of Suitable Ram.Hope that helps.

This is a very interesting development indeed. I'm now even more encouraged that I made the right decision by buying the 3x 1Gig 465's (couldn't pass on the deal on Newegg, got all three of them for a total of $480us

) I was slightly worried about my memory ceiling but I was planning on using iray if I reached that limit... now I may not have too. I'll be purchasing in a few days. I'm just waiting on my new PSU to power them and then testing a bit to see if I'll get the results I'm hopping for out of 1056 Cuda cores! P.S. that's more cores than 2x480gtx for the price of one 480gtx.

I'm pretty sure the 465gtx is on the way out so you could catch a fair deal here and there. I'd recommend my deal but that ended a week ago.
