Render VS Preview

I'm having a hell of a time getting the Preview and and the actual Render to look the same without having to change camera settings every time I switch. They're always a stop or two different in brightness. Naturally, I'd like to preview my stuff, and then click render and have the render be of the same overall brightness as the preview. Can somebody explain the best practice for this?
Thanks!

Hi, hm, did you use a plugin? Standalone has no preview.
If yes it is the best to post in the plugin section of your 3d software with all informations:
Software versions, system specs, screenshots and so forth.
Cheers, mib.

..it depends..
if You use let's say 3ds max.. and have Your view split in four parts start rendering while standing in camera view - then it takes some params from camera =) but if You press let's say on top view, it seems, that the imiger settings are going to be taken from render parameters tab rather than camera =) I might be wrong with explanation, but I always see this happening.
other thing is that Max will apply gamma correction.. so keep in mind if You left that option in the settings.
