Displacement Work-Around

I have been away from the forum for a while, doing my main work in Architecture. I am doing a new interior set of renders and a video in Max/Octane. I was spoiled with VRays nice displacement features. As a workaround I am trying to get my fireplace to have some realism by displacing the geometry in Max. I have spent hours on it and I have had no success. Any suggestions?
I had previously spent hours with 'normals' without success.
Thanks!
Brian

Hi there =)
personally I simply subdivide surface as much as I can with help of modifier so in any given moment I could switch it off =) and apply native max displace modifier on top =) it works out & if You add any type of bump, whether it's simple or normal =) it makes the surface look good enough =)but..I f You work in animation do remember the higher Your poly count is more time Your scene will be under preparation phase - so use this technique wisely =)

Thank you, Glimpse.. you are right. The subdivide killed my scene performance. I used a better texture that looked more real. I appreciate the help.
