Visible Light from a Lamp

I looked through manual and searched the forums. How do I create visible light, like from a lamp or overhead ceiling light? Not sure I want to try IES lighting. Looks complicated and probably longer render times. I guess I need a volumetric light? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated., Thanks.

Randall.

Hi - set the material of the lamp bulb, or ceiling light filament to a "diffuse" and add an "emission" (blackbody). Set the "power" to the light level you want. Set the "opacity" to something like 0.1 (whatever sets the render result at a point where the light intensity doesn't overpower the scene. If you have a lamp cover, start by setting it's opacity to 0, since having the light from the emitter go through glass will slow render times - and optimising that is a more advanced topic.
