you need to clarify a set resolution if you're going this route, as that affects the memory.

I cant post a pic here (for model confidentiality reasons) but I managed 4.5m poly -no textures- in 1gb using 7gb sys ram in the process.
I'd like to hear from someone with a GTX460/2gb how much sys ram is required to fill that with I guess ~9m polys :roll: :geek:

I can answer some of my own question.
I know my GTX460/2gb will handle a 8m poly scene but I thought I would try the RBG statuette from Stanford 3d scanning repository (exactly 10m poly see pic) using 8gb of sys ram. It worked fine but it did use some page file as well however unfortunately its just a little too big too render. Cant be by much though. The 8m poly scene with multiple materials actually took longer to load, I guess because it paged to disk more...
The strange thing is on the basis of my previous estimates of 12.5% free space needed it ought to have run but no... not even when I used a tiny image res. to save space. Bummer :(
Perhaps when I resaved it from Meshlab as .obj from .ply I picked the wrong options cos the .obj file is a little bigger than I expected...have to check that out sometime...not today...my feeling is that it might have squeaked in with only one material.
I'm guessing if the file is truly as lean as it gets it will run ok at 9.75m...with a reasonable image size...which is ok by me :)
I dont think I will ever need that many poly in a scene myself. Gotta find the limits of my own set up though :roll:
Pity that particular one wouldnt render for me though cos it would have been nice to do. :geek:
Hope that helps people gauge their needs.
I should cull just a few polys and see if I can get to render shouldnt I? 8-)
