Here is a stylized hair-shader test I did and think it came out well despite the obvious layering in the model..

Here is an updated version of the model- three layers instead of two

hmm, seems maybe too shiny? looks a little like plastic, may be lighting or something though. maybe the hair strands are too perfect. try making a frizzled hair mesh next to it so you can see how your material looks for both scenarios.

I think it looks like real hair, but....
There seems to be something missing that's hard to put my finger on.
In its current state it looks (to me) maybe like hair that has been dyed which is perfectly fine but it doesn't look like 100% natural hair. And I could be wrong - this is very subjective.
I'm wondering if it might need to be slightly translucent?
Also: Is there any kind of falloff in it?
I'd be curious to see the node map also.

The three layered one looks great, at this distance we should see each hair strand individually, in the other versions they blend together and create a strange mass. I think that hair is not as dense as one might think, some space between strands would be nice, imo what makes hair look really good is the modelling, the shader is important (and yours looks very nice) but not as critical as the mesh.

Thanks for the input! and sorry for my delay. I meant to update this allot earlier... I see what you mean by the plastic look and I have been trying to get rid of it. Also I have to stress that I have no intention now of making a realistic hair, more of a highly stylized hair. somewhere in between cartoon and puppet or uncanny. No real hair strands, only a solid shape; it´s three layered torus-knots.
Here is the updated hair an the shader tree if your interested.

Good job, but it may look too shiny i think. Also the colours are throwing me off a bit.
