The eyes have it... black lines & rayepsilon

I'm sure this has to be solved by now...
How do you use a non-zero rayepsilon WITHOUT adding black lines to the eyes and face? Even 0.00001 adds black lines.
I want something like 0.0003 so that the shadow on the face is a bit fuzzy rather than straight-lined.
