Instances question

Hello all,

We have very recently converted from cpu based rendering with Maxwell to GPU based rendering in Octane. So far, things are looking really great.

We are working on a 3d scene of an architect's building model filled with an interior architect's furniture models. We are making a 3d flythrough from outside throughout the building.
At this point we keep running into the triangle limit of something like 16 - 20 million tri's.

We are doing the best we can with render instances, hiding furniture we can't see at that moment and so on, but it makes me wonder about auto generated instances.
Maxwell has an option to auto generate instances, which really helps with such large scenes.

Are there plans for a similar option in Octane or do we have to get smarter with the instance tools available in Cinema 4d as it is?

sorry but cannot understand what's wrong with render instances on our plugin? Did not use this?

Hello, thanks for the quick reply!

We are indeed using render instances and the way it works with the plugin we are able to get our render to work nicely.

What I meant is that we used to 'stack' instances as it were, we would model a piece of furniture, xref that model into a floorplan, make instances, xref the floorplan into the building and then render.

With Octane, we noticed that if you instance instances, parts get left out.
Instead, we have to use render instances in one model only, in our case the buildings model.
Also, we had a problem where Octane would display *** Render Failure *** when we used regular instances as opposed to render instances.

It is not that we are complaining, nor is it a feature request, it was just something we noticed.
Because Maxwell auto generates instances, I assume that our stacked instances work.

Would you recommend render instances as offered by Cinema 4D as the way to render very large models with Octane render?

instancing the instances will not work until next releases. They are need some improvements. This is literally complex situation. Normal instances will not generate any Octane Instancing and will convert to geometry.
Thanks and keep your eyes for updates

Thanks aoktar, it must be incredibly complex to archieve what you are doing under the hood so to say.
Instancing the instances sounds like it is something to look forward to!
For now, we will continue using regular render instances.
