How to get a simple animation to be rendered?

After playing a bit around with the c4d demo plugin I am very disappointed. I just try to get a very simple animation with a ball that moves along an axis to be rendered.
The preview renderer in the settings windows just renders the current frame again and again. It doesn't save anything and it doesn't even update the view according to the animation. What are the input fields "From" and "To" for?
The picture viewer doesn't render anything until making the sphere objects editable. Is that meant to be this way? HyperNurbs and MoGraph objects are supported (not tested yet) but not a simple sphere? After making it polygonal, rendering in the picture viewer then starts and renders very fast until frame 35 (from 100). Then it stucks. For 15 minutes now.
Is it just a problem of the demo? I need to test at least a simple short animation.
I've aready clicked on buy, but now I fear to get just a big frustation when buying. Very pity.
