Revit > Octane?

Hi

Right now I use Revit > 3d max design > Octane plugin.

But I would like to try out the standalone edition of Octane, as I find it a bit troublesome working in 3d max, where I have to have several windows open, and I can't just turn the camera in the Octane view, and when you only have one monitor, there is not much space.
But I might use Ocane in a wrong way in 3d max?

I guess I need a obj exporter for Revit. I have found http://www.simlab-soft.com/3d-plugins/R ... -main.aspx has any tried this one?

I know there is a plugin for Reivt in deveopment, but I guess that will be the same as in 3d max, serveral windows open to navigate, adjust settings and to render?

Any input is welsome :-)

Thanks

For the Revit plugin - the workflow is very quick - simply run the plugin from Revit and open the Viewport. It handles all the material conversion, camera matching, etc. You can also save Octane setups as "defaults" for specific Revit materials. The plugin also aligns the Octane sun to the Revit sun.

Hi Paul

I have seen your plugin for revit, and I sure will give it a try - When it's released.

But as I write, I really would like to test the standalone Octane render, as the graphic overview seems quite interesting.

So anyone knowing of a obj export from Revit?

I tried the one from simlab, but it rotates the model by 90 degress :-(

Thanks

One option is to export to FBX, and then use the FBX converter from the FBX SDK to convert the file to OBJ. That seems to be the best way to get accurate geometry and UV's.

To flip the model, you can do that in Octane Standalone. Put the imported mesh into a geometry placement, and then rotate it (try X 90, Y 180).

Of course the Revit plugin will provide a much easy way of doing this.

Hi Paul

Thank you for your input.

I have now tried to export as FBX from Revit, convert to obj via FBX converter 2013.3 from autodesk.

The model is still rotated (strange), but that I can solve (just figured out how) - but it seems that FBX exported via Revit > export > fbx does not include materials :-( (or I have misunderstod something)

Oh my, strange that one have to have so many problems related to file formats in the year 2013 :-( well I know, I can just use the Octane plugin for 3dmax design (comes with our subscribtion), as this works just fine, but I just wanted to play with the standalone version :-)

I think I'll have to try your revit plugin when it's released. Will there be a demo version?

There is no way to get materials (texturemap names in particular) from Revit into any app other than 3ds max (which reads them directly from the encoded library).

This limitation is in Revit 2014 too :-)

There will be a demo version a few weeks after the initial release.

Hi Paul

I normally use Lumion, and the Collada exporter created by Act-3d, it includes all materials and names?

I'm looking forward to your plugin :-)

I haven't used Lumion, however my understanding is that the Revit texturemap filenames are encrypted in the material database, and only 3ds can read them. So I would guess that whilst the Collada exported can read the Revit material color, shininess, etc, it cannot read the texturemap filenames. The Octane plugin gets around this by having a pre-defined table of Revit materials and their respective texturemap and bump map filenames.

My mistake, I actually never map any textures in revit, only names, glass, wall, floor etc.

The names are included in the collada file.

Though decals works fine using the collada exporter.
