2 x GTX 480 on two separate PSUs?

Hi all,

would it work if I install two GTX 480s on a PC and feed them with two separate PSUs. One of the PSU will be the main one (it will feed all the components on the PC with electricity including the first GTX 480) and the second will be dedicated to the second GTX 480.
The GTX 480s I have picked are already straining my budget and don't want to by a single 1000W+ PSU.
Could such configuration cause any problems?

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

I did mine with 6 HDDs connected to one PSU and the other to the mainbord and the two GPUs..

I'm not that sure about the two separate gpus each on another psu though, it will still draw power from you mainboard I would think. The only thing I could think of is different stability in voltages on different psu units.. you know there are different values depending on the loads. Sounds a bit tricky..
How many hdds or dvdroms are you using on your computer, if you have a lot of them try to hook them up on one PSU and the gpus and motherboard on the other one, that way power is not connected to the other PSU.
Still thought, I saw somewhere a PSU that was like only to power graphic cards.. so you could go that way, but I didn't want to play with my PSUs like you're trying right now, the safer bet is keep one psu on motherbord other on the hdds and dvdroms

Interesting topic. I was thinking the same thing. But, how does one put 2 psu's in one tower case. AFAIK, all cases only support one psu.

If there's a case that can take 2 psu's, I'd really like to know of it.

I have a micro render farm- 4 nodes installed in a metal filing cabinet. So space is not really an issue. I was just wondering if what I wanted was feasible since each GTX 480 is close to 450 GBP. Anybody with experience?

Thanks a lot guys for the help guys,

although I wasn't actually looking to buy a PSU :)
I guess I will try my idea on my old video cards first and if something goes wrong it wont be such a shame.

Cheers.

the old paperclip technique, it's working, if you blow it up blame it on the guy from the link

http://aphnetworks.com/tutorials/psu_paperclip_trick

that's how you do that, and my pc is completely caseless.. it's just sitting on a box with everything sticking out :), proved useful so far, apart from that one time I spilled some beer on my hdd

Acc24ex, that's a great find man. I'll give it a go but first I'll use some of my cheap PC components. Thanks a lot, man.
