Possible rig update for my pc: ¿will this be useful?

I actually have a QuadCore Q6600 2.40GHz

As stated by the manufacturer, my motherboard supports up to 8 GBs of DDR2 1200, I´m using now just one slot with 2GBs running a Win7 32bits. So my plans are:

1. Upgrading the OS to Win8 64
2. Boost the RAM to the maximum 8 GBs supported by my MoBo ( I guess separated in the 4 slots, so 2 GBS each )

And the question is:

¿Is this plan worthy? ¿Do you think upgrading to 64bits and adding the maximum amount of memory supported will give me noticeable benefits when using Octane?

... will give me noticeable benefits when using Octane?
It will give you benefits for everything and you need a lot of memory to voxelize high poly meshes in octane.
Me sometimes reach my 8 GB on heavy scenes but it is enough for your GTX 550 Ti.
I cant remember exactly but you need 4 x size of ram to calculate mesh at voxelizing.

Cheers, mib.

Hello Paquito,

I would suggest the following:

1) Definitely upgrade from 2GB to 8GB of memory (you can purchase DDR2 800 or 1066 if it is cheaper). Go with G.Skill, Crucial or Corsair if available. Just remember to test the memory for 12-24 hours with Memtest86 ( http://www.memtest86.com/ ). It is free to download.
2) Upgrade to Windows 7 SP1 x64 (I would wait to upgrade to Windows 8 until they release their first service pack).
3) Purchase a SSD for your primary system drive (128GB minimum, 256GB preferred). My suggestion would be a Crucial/Micron M4 or Samsung 830/840.

All three combined should breath new life into your Q6600 system and extend it's usefulness for another 2-3 years.

Well, I don´t really work with heavy meshes, my scenes always tend to be light, but it´s a good thing being able to handle bigger scenes, but I guess the main advantage will be switching to 64 bits, do you agree?

32bit operating systems only see less than 4gb of RAM..so.. if You add up to 8gb upgrade for 64bit, or use the rest as a 4gb RAM drive. is it going to boost Your productivity, yes? are You going to see boost in Octane? doubt, unless You start playing with more complex scenes. & for the final note, I wouldn't look for W8 just yet.

That was my thougs. This upgrade will be an overall improvement, and will benefit handling bigger scenes. It will not improve render times, since Octane relays on the GPU. What about switching to Octane 64 bits? Will there be something better than using the 32 bits version?

personally I haven't felt any difference switching from x86 (32bit) to 64bit.

biggest difference in productivity for me brought wacom tablet after switching from regular mouse.
then operating system move from raptor to SSD..
& iGPU while leaving rendering on dedicated graphic cards.

as for the RAM..exept, that I don't hit the ceiling anymore =) honestly,
I haven't felt any diference switchin from 4 to 8gb, and now to 32gb..

You sure you want to jump into Windows 8 already?... maybe you should let it mature some...

Win7x64 Pro SP1 is ROCK SOLID!!! This is by far my favorite and most stable os ever!
