Problems exporting from 3dsMax to Octane Render

Hey everyone. I'm pretty new to Octane and somewhat new to 3dsMax as well. I've been having some weird results every time I export a .obj file to Octane Render. Basically I set up a scene in 3dsMax and assigned the renderer to Octane. In my 3dsMax scene I have a cylinder, a teapot, a plane and a few torus'. Then I apply basic octane materials to my objects(diffuse and glossy). I make sure that every object is assigned a different material before export. Then when I export these as a .obj file and open the .obj with octane everything is one material and in a way one object... I can't individually assign materials to each of my objects. If I change the color of the cylinder the whole scene changes with it. I'm wondering if there is a fix for this and how to do it.

I found a weird fix for it which I don't exactly like. In 3dsMax before assigning materials you can assign a color to the object in the modify panel or during creation of an object. But it isn't really a material and I know that it's main use is to keep organized in the viewport. When I do this it exports the .obj properly somewhat. But it doesn't have "real" materials applied. Just the simple colors you can assign to the object outside of the material editor. It would be nice to be able to export the materials I started to make in the 3dsMax interface to Octane.

Just wondering if there is a different way around exporting to Octane without the problems I've been having.

Thanks guys! :)

Hi jvincent,

Try making sure you have the .mtl file as well as the .obj file. Make sure the .mtl is in the same directory as the .obj when loading into octane.

If that fails can you zip and attach them here?

Thanks
Chris.

you most probably have no standard mats in your scene (only vray/mental ray/maxwell or so); if this is the case, you need to convert them before exporting: a free script is available here: http://www.evvisual.com/index.php?optio ... 2&Itemid=9 (last one on that page)...

Thank you...
I know about this script and I tried to use it but it doesn't seem to work in MAXDes2012.
I import Revit Models with Adesk materials and nothing happens...

I think the best way is to export scene from Max to Octane without using obj files...
Another great thing would be to import ocs files directly into MAX.

There is import/export for Maxwell .mxs files so I guess it can be done for Octane too...

Thanks a lot Fooze. I'm gonna give that a try right now. Sorry for the late reply... I also have another problem. I render a lot of interior scenes and when I export one of these scenes I can't locate the camera in the octane standalone version... I don't know if the octane camera exports as well. By the way I'm using octane materials as well as an octane camera. And all I can see is the exterior of the house. I can't seem to be able to get inside.

I apologize if it is unappropriate to go off topic in the same thread and if it is please let me know.

Thanks :D

Hi Jvincent,

The wavefront .obj file has no specifications for camera so it can't be exported from 3ds max.
I suggest you take a look at this free (unofficial) export script for max: http://render.otoy.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=7572
It should export as obj for you and transfer as much as it can over, camera location, material info etc.

The camera rotates and zooms around it's target. It doesn't "hit" objects or anything.
So you may just need to move the camera target using the "camera target picking mode" (button on the bottom of the standalone render viewport). Just enable this mode and then click on something to set the camera target. Center the camera on one of the outside walls, so that you can rotate and zoom the camera into the house.

Thanks
Chris.

Thanks again man for the help. It's getting quite late over here so I'll make to try that script and the rest of the things you suggested. I'll let you know how it goes ;).
