i´ve been asking myself the same question; like you i tried to play with the samples - couldn´t see any difference.
Manual still SUCKS!

When OTOY proudly announced the launch of version 1.0 they delivered it with a manual that was half a year old!!!!

a few month before that, i have been writing a couple of posts here in the forum to get any information on the
development of the manual; i´ve been waiting weeks (and months now) for an answer... not one single reply.

Don´t get me wrong: Octane is a fantastic product!

The questions like "What do the samples of a light source?" has been around this forum for a couple weeks,
and THERE WE DID NOT GET AN ANSWER UNTIL NOW..................................................................

I envy you for your positivity, I must admit!
I, personally, am bored of spending hours on the forum + waiting for days,
hoping to get an answer to the simplest questions...

Standalone manual says

"Emission nodes have a new parameter, sampling_rate, to control
how much weight is given to the emitter when picking an emitter to
sample. This allows you to choose which light sources will receive
more samples. In the above example you can increase the rate for the
spotlights, so they get sampled adequately."

It means sampling rate works with several light sources.

I can write very detailed manual instead of developing of plugin and octane itself.
