HDRI Sharp shadows

As it is now octane doesn't produce natural/accurate shadows with hdri
I can't find a link about it but I think it's maxwell render V2 that has implemented a tech to get sharp shadows from the sun or any other bright spots of an hdr map, any chance we get this for octane ?

Hi,

This is possible, but it will slow down octane quite a bit if i were to implement it on octane.
would'nt it be better if i just add a functionality where you can use an HDR map and the sun component of our daylightsystem?

Radiance

From the link you gave seems Maxwell finally FIX their engine, and now it's behaving more like Vray and they charge for this :O

Octane would detect the brightest spot in the hdr and use it to set the position of the sun ?

But then it's no more a hdri lightning, in what you are talking about the only thing remaining of the hdr map would be the background and the reflection ?

I don't know for others but for my part I find hdri lightning much better than any daylight system and depending on how much it would slow down the rendering it could worth it.

Well, I think I prefer Radiance solution, I like sharp directional shadows, and HDRI's usually don't really have a true high range, thus creating soft not directional shadows, I just bought 2 hdris from Peter Guthrie http://www.peterguthrie.net/blog/2010/02/hdri-skies/ that I'm using in my current project, and I have to say that they are over the top, but even those won't render really sharp shadows (much, much better than the average) , not in octane not in others, and the best solution, at least in my opinion, is a combo directional light + HDRI.
Just my 2 cents

IMHO complementing hdri with some light source(s) is good enough in 99.9% of cases:) When using sun+hdri, hdri acts as skylight instead of procedural sky which is currently tied with use of sun in octane.

Cheers,

-HDRI + sun for shadows- Yes please! 8-)

I wanted both
You can make sun+hdri good in a lot of scenarios, but sometimes it is not suitable, for example, when you have an studio hdri with multiple lights soft lights and hard lights, the qualitie of hdri in those cases is finest than just simple light sources.
Like in Fry you can choose your hdr image to be environment or ibl. You can use only enviroment + sun system, or don't use sun and use hdri as ibl, as a choice- That would be great to have in octane-

Thx

That would be awesome!
