Feature Request: Custom Apertures (Bokeh)!

Circular apertures are boring and perfect!
What we need is texture support for aperture shapes!
Anyway you get my point.
I was mostly imagining using it for polygonal shapes, diffraction edges, and imperfections that Octane currently doesn't offer, but why not go the whole nine yards?
Basically what I feel octane lacks is IMperfection. You guys have the perfection thing nailed! But photographs don't always look perfect. If we're going for a realistic look, we need realistic imperfections too! And we're moving towards that with the post processing. I hope that the new camera type other than "thinlens" is going to help us out with that. I digress.
I actually did some tests of my own by actually constructing a box around the Octane camera while in 3DS Max, and grouping them so they moved together. I put a black plane with a hand-drawn opacity mask right next to the camera and actually got some neat results!
So this is actually happening in the renderer, just like in real life! Here a physical aperture is affecting the image perfectly... but this is a pain and can easily be simulated in-camera instead of needing a physical rig attached to every camera.

...at least non circular bokeh should be implemented with custom numbers of blades...

-1 I don't see the point of this at all. the reason here is simple: cheep looking second grade effect that non of pro photographers would ever use or aim to..For some, as it is th matter of taste, this might look cool, but is it?..
if You really want something like that, save out z-depth an use some dof generators to achieve this effect it post pro - You'll have more flexibility and artistic freedom.
I think it's time to start giving -1 ,'cos from time to time in this forum is apearing some unreasonable feature requests. it's our all responsability to give ideas for developers to build something usefull, not useless..so, -1
cheers

I don't think that a non circular bokeh is a toy.
A custom bokeh is a add on of a diverse apperture control.
Like frischluft's depth of field. You can choose standart settings like no of blades and so on but you still can use custom bokehs.
A non circular bokeh effect makes much sense for a photorealistic render engine that supports dof effects.

i'm just curious =) is that feature so important? is it going to give so much to majority of renders from users in this comunity?
if You want it You can easily do in post with the help of z-depth & with more flexibility (already sai that)
Yes, non circular aperture is cummon, but all the crazines like hearts/planes..is plain cheep. All in all, I don't see how it can push the realness of renders - end user, Your client, don't care at all wheather Your bokeh has 6 or 7 corners..generally 'nice bokeh' is usually circular one & unless You client is photographer or sort of produser, h might not know what the word bo...means at all..- simply put he doesn't care.
so without trying to be an a..h.... =) I'm just asking is it so important to have this in render engine? =) somehow reminds me the flash request thread not so long ago..if You can have greater flexibility of doing things outside the program, why to bother implimenting this at all.

You can push it as far as you want, you can use it more traditionally like an hexagon or go balls out with plane shapes etc. It's like glare/glow, you can do tacky images with streaks all over or use it subtlely... I understand you would never use that, then don't, but having it inside Octane would mean simplified workflow over compositing z-depth in many cases and for a lot of people... you'd rather get rid of depth of field altogether since it can be composited with z-depth? the same could be said of camera response, gamma, saturation, vignetting, wth let's get rid of all the mesh preview since Photoshop does it anyway
bokeh shapes are used a lot in feature films. In one test release long ago there was this bug I spotted where bokeh was a ring instead of a circle, so I can imagine it's not that hard to do at all. They incidentally introduced a non-circle shape in the renderer, which was fixed later on.

The way I see it, it's about artistic freedom, not artistic confinement. Why would you want less control and not more? This is not a top feature request, and I'm not asking the developers to drop everything to do this, but it should be on their list somewhere. If you want circular perfect bokeh, you don't need to worry about this because it won't affect you or your clients.
