Holy Crap, I didn't know Octane on Linux was this fast!

Last week I was using Windows 7 and a GTS 250. Since then I've upgraded to a GTX 470 and installed Kubuntu 10.04 as an alternate-boot.

Benchmark scene results, all on the same machine:

Windows 7 + GTS 250: 0.94 samples per second.
Windows 7 + GTX 470: 6.96 samples per second.
Kubuntu + GTX 470: 12.96 samples per second.

Hot damn! I'm never rendering with Octane in Windows again! This is awesome!

Now would someone explain why Octane on Linux renders at twice the speed of the Windows version? I love it, I'm just curious...

double speed? are you sure it's not a statistic issue?
if not, I'm going to replace OS in my bootcamp partition very soon :D

Are you sure it's not in directlighting mode instead of patchtracing ??

No, it was with Pathtracing. With Direct Lighting it went from 12 up to 17.

Does it mean that octane can be a lot optimised for win ? or is it a particularity of linux

I should add that I was not running Kubuntu under the Wubi virtualization that you can get for Windows, but as an actual alternate boot.

And hey, speeds will vary, but it definitely performs way better under linux on the same hardware.

this is very strange as the linux version has way more locks than the windows version, so theoretically the windows version should be a teeny bit faster (probably won't notice much at all).

this kind of performance gain is weird, are you sure the scene is %100 the same ?
