i've taken the time to build some gold... these are my attempts, i hope this should be usefull,
any comments or others gold tries are welcome :)

thinking about - a material never stands alone !!!
Every time the envoiment (Light and Objects) adjust the color.
At a specular material is it more than at a diffuse material !

it is obvious ...and even more especially if we use pathracing, radiosity, bidir etc...
that's why i build the material in a light grey /white environnement with white lights.
thinking about that any material can be modified according to our needs ...

great render but the aliasing sadly ruins it a bit for me.
