guys - did u think of implementation some kind of filter for better dof effect? like Alien Skin Bokeh for example?
regular gaussian blur does not look realistically and is not pleasant for the eye...

im not a coder but i think this could be fairly easy to create some kind of a "z-depth" and just apply 2d filter below certain value?

right/wrong?

I would love to have some more control over the bokeh in the render, and not only random lens shapes but some sort of subtle imperfections too .

A bit like this, which was produced a few years ago with Brazil Render 1 http://niroku.com/content/image_nku0074_03_lg.png

I'm a sucker for nice looking bokeh, and for post there are only a few tools I've seen do a good job, based on a texture of a aperture/lens shape though so you lose the imperfections due to some sort of convolution .

Yes please let me choose an image map for the shape of my bokeh
And let me control the chromatic aberration and grain in the blurry area
Like in doff pro. ( post process tool based on a depth map in photoshop )

Sure this would be nice but what I mean is render time bokeh, not a post effect, a bit like how motionblur and out of focus is already .

We need aperture and obstacle maps like this:
