Is it worth the hassle installing linux on a separate SSD? How does Octane perform compared with rendering on Windows? What version of ubuntu are you guys running? Redhat? Mint? Is it a lot faster?

I have to reduce my renderingtimes by a lot. Second 580 soon.

The "hassle" with Linux is worth for a lot of reasons, but not for reducing render times in Octane, cause I don't see how this could be OS related.

Maybe there could be differences because of CUDA/driver versions for different system, but I highly doubt this would produce a relevant difference in render speed. (though I don't mind being proven wrong, if Linux is indeed faster )

Go for Ubuntu (Gnome+Unity) or Mint (Gnome+Cinnamon)

Have you tried rendering on both systems?

Last week I was using Windows 7 and a GTS 250. Since then I've upgraded to a GTX 470 and installed Kubuntu 10.04 as an alternate-boot.


Benchmark scene results, all on the same machine:

Windows 7 + GTS 250: 0.94 samples per second.
Windows 7 + GTX 470: 6.96 samples per second.
Kubuntu + GTX 470: 12.96 samples per second.

Are there other Octane Ubuntu users willing to confirm?

What driver and CUDA versions are you using on the systems? Did you use the same Octane version? Cause it's hard to believe there is such a difference.

He did the rendering in Kubuntu, I already mailed him for a confirmation and info. He has not answered yet.

But if that is true, it is an amazing speed increase!
