Materials look different Plug vs Standalone? Floattexture?

just bought max plugin
I can really see the potential here, so far so good, but a few problems...
same scene, same materials, same sun light, same everything... but the material looks different? max vs standalone, how is this possible?
also I got a multi material with 30 odd sub materials... I want to assign the same specular value eg. 0.1 to some, how do I do that? Like have one control map for all? Do I have to use falloff?
