Hi Octaners,

Let's move a bit !

After the success of the last competition we decided to renew that great CG experience. To inaugurate the recent release of the 2.2 version and to focus on the new features, this time you'll have to move on as this contest is focused on animation.

By participating to this challenge each competitor agrees that his/her submitted animation may be used for promotional purposes on the Octane web site gallery, eg displayed as featured animation.

The competition is being managed by enricocerica.

Who can participate ?

Everybody !

Rules:
  • . You may produce and publish as many submissions as you want.
. The submitted rendering must be made exclusively with Octane Render.
. Submitted animation must have a minimum resolution of 720 px wide and 480 px high, full HD would be great ;)
. The animation length should be at least 20 seconds
. the final format should be FLV (several free tools may allow you to acheive that result, we'll give you more info about that later on)
. You must clearly mention if you've used commercial models or if you've included movie part or images via compositing, in case of doubt we may ask for proofs and we may disqualify any participant who cannot bring that proofs.
. You can use a third party tool:
  • . to assemble the rendered images to make the movie
. to fix lighting issues and fireflies
. to add glare and bloom
    . to add chromatic abberration
. for noise reduction if needed
. for compositing, in this case you should clearly identify what has been made with Octane
Note that if you use excessive noise-reduction and your submission ends up looking blotchy as a result,
this will be taken into account during examination by the jury, and you're image might end up not being chosen.

Practically:
  • . You should place a link to your animations in this thread.
. You can change them until the thread is closed.
. Your final animation should be uploaded in this thread.
. Include in your submission post:
    • . your Name, technical details (polygons, rendertime, etc...) and a short description/inspiration/motivation or idea about your submission.
. If possible add your full credits on the movie.
. Include a screenshot of you working on the image in Octane Render. (this proves it was rendered in Octane Render)
. Don't post your WIP here, use the WIP forum instead.
. Create one single entry and update it with the new animations.
A jury composed by 5 persons will vote and select the winners.

Prizes:
  • Best animation
    1st place : One GTX480 Video Card
    2nd place : One GTX470 Video Card
3rd place : One Octane life time license

    Artistic concept
    One Octane V1.0 license

Timing

The challenge will last for one month.
The competition starts now, 29 May 2010 and will close on the 7th of July 2010 at 20:00 (20pm) GMT+1 (Central European Time)
If we don't get enough participants we may decide to cancel the competition and to postpone it to a later date, in such a case, the submitted animations may be reused in a future challenge.

Good luck to everyone

I was super excited for this until I read the "at least 20 seconds" rule. Can that include the title part? :D

At 20 frames per second which should be quite nice, you need 400 frames, at Octane speed, this is just the time push the start button

I would like to render something like a trailer for my Flying Circus project, but I fear that it is too ambitious for the current memory amount on my system and for the available time as well.

I have to think about something simpler...
