Is it just me or are some of these settings strange?

So far I love Octane, but unless I'm missing something some of these settings seem a bit strange to me:

Roughness slider - the higher the value the smoother the surface (to my mind it should be a smoothness slider, or it should get rougher the higher up it goes)

Aperture - Seems to operate contrary to the way a lens works, you increase the aperture and you get a shallow DOF when in camera, a decrease in the aperture number results in a shallower DOF.

Do I make sense? or am I crazy?

the rougness is the phong exponent, the same type of value used in most other engines.
if i were to use another one, people would have difficulty adapting.

the lens aperture is the radius of the aperture in cm.
the larger it is, the more DOF, the smaller, the less DOF.

Regarding Roughness, I did not make that connection, but should have.

Regarding aperture, it might make more sense to say "aperture size" ? Just from a UI Clarity point of view. A person can figure it out soon enough, but it just seems like a first impression might be that it's backwards. Although my long photo/video history might be what's making me think it's backwards, and everyone else may think it's perfectly clear. (part of why I put it in the public area to see what other people thought as well) Just trying to help where I can.

Thanks for the clarification.

I was wondering about the aperture control as well.
Maybe offer an option so you can use F16, F8 etc... in the same way it is planned to offer camera rot. in degrees.

does anyone have any information source or table relating those values to actual aperture radius lengths ?

That might get very complicated, especially since they can go psycho high on this, however, if a person is matching perspectives to comp into a shot, then it's something that would certainly be helpful. I don't want to make things hard on you guys, but eventually it would be a good thing to implement I'd bet.

I think that F-stops are pretty dependent on the lens though, so it could become a little complex.

As seen here - it depends on the lens focal length and I'm assuming these focal lengths are based on a 35mm based system.

Depending on your host app ( I use 3dsmax and would match my cg to the plate there ) then hit the render button and you have your match in octane.
You could chose to follow this workflow for now as its accessible today.

I think these are all valid arguments and i'll put them on our long-term todo list.
in a traditional exporter based engine you might need this,
but in octane you just slide the slider until it's just right, so i guess for now this will have to do...
(i'd like to focus on getting MLT, portals etc... done first)

For sure... these are just features one would like to see as the software matures.

Exactly right - this isn't a right now thing, it's just a thing that I wanted to suggest.
