Just how many samples do you use?

Curious just how many samples you guys use? I find that for most stuff, I can use about 500 with a pretty decent look, and sometimes a little more, up to 1K, but I start seeing diminishing returns at that point for the time it's taking.
How many samples do you use, and when do you think it's pointless to let it go on?

it depends entirely on your scene...
let it cook until you're happy with the result.

Radiance is right. It really depends on your scene and your visual preference. When running a big product render I will generally do the full 16000 samples. Granted I stop "really" seeing the difference after about 10k. I typically do about 1200-1500 just to reduce the amount of noise in a scene at minimum.
