Crashing while adding .obj

Just got the demo going with a new 260 card. Installed all correct (from readme) cuda drivers - the interface loads and everything is fine until I 'add' an .obj. It goes through the motions of loading it in and then the error dialog comes up telling me it is closing down.

I can add a material and the material ball loads and allows me to move, rotate and zoom with no issues.

Not sure what to do.

I added an .obj scene from Rhino export and also a 'benchmark'? scene from here.

Running 32 bit XP with all SRs.

do the demosuite scenes work ? (you can download them on the demo download page).

if they do, you're model is probably too large for a 32bit process to voxelise.
octane needs a lot of system memory to efficiently build a compact representation of the data to upload to the GPU.

one thing you could try is use the adress extension trick, this gives you a bit more memory for use on a 32bit system:

In the end, if you're serious about using octane, i'd recommend upgrading to a x64 version of windows, which does'nt suffer from a small per process limit.

Thanks.

The demo scenes work great! I exported the .obj from Rhino and then once imported through Modo 'then' added....seems fine now. The previous .obj direct from Rhino was only a cube and a sphere so was very small memory-wise. Hopefully all of the Modo objs will work just fine.

Looks like a great rendering app...well done on creating this!

2.1 (current) is not compatible with OBJ's exported via rhino.
they use some specific syntax.
we're working on fixing this in the upcoming beta 2.2 release.

As I use Rhino, am in the same boat in that I can't try Octane with my geometry, but I don't have Modo (or other software) to use as a go between. Where can I download the demo scenes to try? When I downloaded the renderer, I looked in its install directory (C:\Program Files\Refractive Software\Octane Render Demo 1.021 x64), but don't see them in there, and I don't see them on the download page.

Thanks,
Sam

If you are looking for a FREE program to take your Rhino obj into, you can install Blender (Wicked learning curve, but much better these days) or just grab FREE version of DAZ Studio and load non-complex scene and export using the settings found here
