4* EVGA HYDRO gtx580 in this MB?

Hi

For various reasons including time constraints etc I have decided on 580's.

I'm putting together a system, I was hoping for some advice on whether my MB will support having 4* EVGA GeForce GTX 580 Classified Hydro Copper 3072MB in it.

http://www.evga.com/products/moreInfo.a ... Family&sw=

http://www.gigabyte.co.nz/products/prod ... id=3449#ov

my MB is a Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R (rev. 2.0) it says it supports 3*sli, but my question is since Octance doesn't rely on sli, can I slot 3 cards into the PCI*16 slots and 1 more into the PCI*8, all water cooled etc, and have it run? IE 4 cards not in SLI?

guessing 1500watt PS.

Thankyou in advance.

Yeah seems like it would take 4 single slot cards and run all at 8x speed.
I expect the system will draw about 1250w full on so yeah a solid 1500w supply would be good.
I think Thermaltake and Silverstone make them, probably there are others.
Make sure you have clearance at the bottom of the case for the last card with plumbing.
The next generation of cards are out soon might be an idea to see what the performance is like before you commit to 580's.

Thanks, check for clearance on the last card - good idea- hadn't thought to look @@.

I've just been looking at the Kepler leaked info etc, really a bad time to commit to something right now...But I also don't want to lose extra work since my client has asked me to price up a full HD animation of one I have just completed at SD using mentalray. The last section of an architecture project I used Octane for the stills and they were all very impressed with the results, as was I. But I do need the 3gb so 590's are out atm too. Having spent some time today looking at cards, I've also come to realise getting a WC system and the EVGA hydros will be tricky so -

-What do you think about getting some PCI-E extender cables and spacing air cooled cards out in selct areas of the case, my case is Full tower and spacious.

This is painful, anyone have a reasonably good idea of when the keplers go to market? my client won't want to wait to long otherwise the actual building will be up!

thanks,

Some Kepler come out either later this month or early next, the GTX660, 670 and 680 I understand, with 2, 1.75 and 2 gb vram respectively. When will we see those in NZ? I don't know, maybe a month later. Supply might be tight for a while and at a premium price. The 2x vram models and the watercooled varieties?, who knows, ~6 months later maybe, not soon enough for your purposes I suspect. Supposedly they draw more power too so I would think a solid 1500w would be a min for 4x GTX680.
Don't have experience of risers but some users here seem to use them OK.
Think if it was me I would gut another case to bolt beside the main one to carry the cards well spaced out and with some strategic extra fans. Just take out the facing side panels and make some handy framework inside with your old Mechano set
Dunno just an idea, better than having them hanging in space with no.8 wire and duct tape or something. Also because the GTX580 are double slot you will be extending all slots with your particular mobo to fit the risers next to each other. Don't think risers can be very long either 6-8" ? Suspect risers would be hard to obtain locally....
In the meantime you could probably stick another GTX 580 in to speed things along for your client's next job without heat becoming too much of an issue.
HTH.

Probably you could keep your existing PS too and stick another in the bolt on box for say two cards. 8-)
You might need to import the risers I think. Good luck with it. :)
You could get another 580 now and add 2x 680 later when available and you have the box sorted.
