new user with a couple of dumb question

hi ,
i just started to use the demo yesterday and decided to buy Octane on an impulse :-)
here are my first test : http://www.refractivesoftware.com/forum ... f=6&t=1456
i tend to consider myself a somewhat seasoned maya mental ray user ( did create a gnomon master class and a couple of gonmon workshop videos .... )
but now .. i feel like throwing mental ray out of the window ...
Octane is great ( well not 100 % now .. but on the right path :-) )

now i have a couple of ( probably dumb ) questions concerning the features that we can expect in the final version ,
would there be ....
- SSS ?
- self ilumination / luminance ?
- some kind of glow ? ( pwwwwwweeeaaase !!!!! )
- lights ? ( area , points , or similar )
- the ability to use an environment for illumination .. but not have it displaying in the finale render ?
- some kind of volumetric fog ( think volumetric light ..espcially )
- any chance to split the render in pass ?
- for now i am only able to save as a png .. that would change later ..right ?

i would probably add more question later ...
thank you

Hey xtrm3d. I think i can answer most of your questions, no questions are dumb ;)

- SSS ? Scheduled for 2.0 i think
- self ilumination / luminance ? Mesh emitters are scheduled for beta 2.3 i think
- some kind of glow ? ( pwwwwwweeeaaase !!!!! ) Dont know
- lights ? ( area , points , or similar ) Dont think so
- the ability to use an environment for illumination .. but not have it displaying in the finale render ? This is scheduled also i think
- some kind of volumetric fog ( think volumetric light ..espcially ) Scheduled for 2.0 i think- any chance to split the render in pass ? Scheduled.
- for now i am only able to save as a png .. that would change later ..right ? Yes.

Hope this helps a bit. Radiance can explain better ofc ;)

Cheers.

Chris

ok .. have another question ..
now that i have a couple of rendering under my belt i realise that i must be missing something .. ( yes did read teh manual..lol )

- can i save/load a material ?
- can i copy/past a material ?
-i am not able to expand the object node ..
i see all those input connection .. and i am assuming that i should be able to see all the material node that are importaed with teh object ..or am i wrong ?

any way to import two or three object and to plug them in my scene/ camera ?
i would love to be able to move and rotate some object independantly to each other

and a probably very stupid question ... any chance to import an animation out of maya ? with joint deformation ?

Let me try to answer with my limited knowledge. Welcome to correct my faulty impression if any.

- can i save/load a material ?
As long as you have assigned materials before you export from Maya, in your case. In Octane you can change the texture maps if you want.
You can even update the obj file if you modified some changes from Maya and export it out with the same name, there's a refresh button at the button of the obj/ geometry node.

- can i copy/past a material ? Not at this moment.
-i am not able to expand the object node .. It is not expandable at this moment, Radiance is working on it.
i see all those input connection .. and i am assuming that i should be able to see all the material node that are importaed with teh object ..or am i wrong ?
You should be able to, by clicking on the object node in the graph editor. All the materials attached will show on the right hand side of the interface.
any way to import two or three object and to plug them in my scene/ camera ? Not at this moment. Some Maya guru (cgbeige and bazuka, probably some others) are working on importing the camera/ obj sequence exporter plugin for Maya.
i would love to be able to move and rotate some object independantly to each other

Animation at this moment should be done in Maya. For animation/ obj sequence exporter, please see this thread:
