3dsmax meshsmooth viewport and render displays

Does anyone have a thought on whether the displays for meshsmooth in the max viewport and the rendering can be configured or would this be possible to input this for a later release. Simpler explanation, using the viewport subdivision at 0 and the render subdivision at a specific setting. This would be useful, if possible to improve performance for complex scenes.
