It's very annoying for my work because I work on projects shared with windows users who have installed the 2020 kit for Modo and now I can no longer work with them.
I would suggest if you are working with Windows plugin users, that you all install the same version of the plugin. Then you should be able to freely swap and share .lxo files. You should also be able to load .lxo file saved from Windows 2020.1 versions of the plugin, although it will not pick up the Octane 2020.1 specific nodes and pins.

As far as strategic decisions such as Operating System choices and rendering hardware, my recommendation would be to either move to Catalina/OctaneX, or Windows/Linux with NVidia cards. I can no longer support plugins for High Sierra.

Thanks

Paul

Hi all - I will personally look into what OTOY can do here for users stuck on macOS CUDA, but with the release and massive support needed to get Octane X going, we can't commit to actively keep updating macOS CUDA versions in tandem going forward. I highly recommend that users migrate to a recent macOS release if they want to use the latest versions of Octane.

This is not a decision made by Paul, so please do not blame him. This is an OTOY call, forced by the reality of the Apple ecosystem. I have advised all our plug-in devs to commit to Metal development (over CUDA) and that means flipping at least their primary dev machines to mac OS 10.15+ if need be. Due to Apple, pretty much all mac dev machine's (even OTOY's own), can't readily switch OS versions without practically buying a new machine.

CUDA on macOS impossible to support and maintain at this point, this is the world we have been living with since 10.14 came out, and there is nothing we can do about it. The reason we put all the work into Octane X/Metal is to make sure Octane X on Mac has a long and bright future, even with CUDA support being taken off the table - it is pixel perfect to CUDA versions. Please understand that we may need to literally duplicate development overhead to support both old macoS CUDA and new macOS Metal releases, and that may not be feasible (we actually need TWO machines right now to support macOS 10 and macOS 11 releases even on X)

I promise to look into what we can do to ease this transition, and will get back to everyone here once we have an update we can share.

@Paul, I cannot ask my co-workers to revert to the 2019 octane version
@Goldorak
I fully understand that in the future, Octane can no longer be developed in tandem.
I don't blame Paul there is nothing personal. ;)
I just wanted to understand why all the other Octane 2020 kits for Mac Os (houdini, C4D, blender, lightwave) are available on Cuda and Metal on your download area except Modo.
he is the only one to escape this rule.
And why did you build a version of Octane Standalone 2020 for Mac Os Cuda? It doesn't make much sense if you plan to leave this environment
Usually there is a major Octane update every year. it leaves time to think about a new hardware investment but it's very hard to stop the updates like that.
I thought I could use octane 2020 a little longer and then make a hardware transition during the year (not a Mac that's for sure)

Hi Paul,
I get constant crashes (or some weird messed up Images) with a mix material (Specular with Random Walk/Diffuse) and a Layered Material for Coating. Is there a way to send you the scenefile?

Please PM me a zip file containing the scene, or email to Paul at physicalc-software dot com.
