I know it's an open theme'd contest, but i just didn't see any new years in hardly anything submitted to this point, so I had to upload something that was in line with the title more.
And while I hardly expect to win (even if I could really use a new graphics card :) ). I thought I'd put in a graphic that I made for this based loosely on nixie tube clocks, and a retro 50's clock I saw. It's by no means perfect, but here's a clock celebrating its biggest day.

Hope this year will be very prosperous for everyone, and full of joy and peace.

Maybe a bit of fine tuning, but at least now there's a new years themed entry in the newyears contest :) (maybe I've missed some before now but I think I'm the first, otherwise good for whoever got something newyears themed in here also).

Actually the competition has been extended for two more weeks (because of the new version coming out next week). It just hasn't been officially announced in this thread.
Can you point me to a thread where this information is, please?
Thank you

it's in the next release 2.4 anouncement, http://www.refractivesoftware.com/forum ... =33&t=4870, also I don't quite think it's fair, but again it might give me some time to do something ;) , yet since I've already seen your entries, I'm doing it more for fun than with any thought of winning :D

Only one critic, the grass. Maybe you could expand the floor in the shadow area under the fence to cover.

Congratulations and cheers, mib
Hello Mib, thank you for your comment. I made some changes, I decided to use geometry for grass, misalign the sidewalk, and other details.

See you soon,

@colin, yes I know about that, but it should be officially announced in this thread (in the first post) to cast away all doubts. Also, many people missed to notice it in that post.

Hi,
My name is Johannes Ewers. I'm interested in historic ships from the great age of sail at the end of the 18th century.
My image shows the Leopard, an English 50 gun battle ship in service during the Napoleonic wars.
My set up: Windows Vista, E8600, 3GB, 8800 GTS with 320 MB RAM.
That is really the low end for Octane rendering. Therefore, I could only create a 1300x900 image. Had to switch to a screen resolution of 800x600 to give the last piece of RAM to Octane.
The ship model was created in Blender 2.49 by me, has about 420,000 faces. As sky background I used a photo.
The render used path tracing, 2400samples/px (took for ever with my equipment). There are still lots of fireflies.
Hope you like it.

Update:
Did a new render with the new 2.4 version of octane. Still fireflies. Therefore I rendered two images and computed the min of both. That removed most of the fireflies.
