However, the Matte functionaility in Diffuse (whether its intention is strictly for
ShadowCaster or not) is damn close to being able to used for masking. It is likely
just a matter of duplicating this code and stripping the shadow stuff - to make
a Mask feature... which would be very, very nice to have. Maybe you could
mention this to your contact(s) at Otoy - since we are all trying to make Octane
more useful/powerful for compositing.

Thnx again bro
Perhaps this is what you are looking for: If you set the Opacity to 0% in the matte object (with matte enabled) the shadows issue is not there, and alpha channel in clean in the object.

 Yes!!! Thanks pal!

I did have it at zero... but, I had an RGBSpectrum (with Black) connected...
that was pretty stupid actually.. but I could see many others making this same
mistake.

Probably should update manual -- how one can use this as a
ShadowCatcher when color is attached - or matte/mask when not
attached.

Manual (which we know is a work-in-progress) says :

Matte: This is a boolean value to enable or disable a matte mask of a diffuse material.

Maybe call out the distinction between the two uses...

I am testing Direct Lighting kernel with a very simple object, real units size. This is what I get ... I am not sure why you get a dark ceilings, I need to test your scene to see what could be the problem (a problem with materials, with lighting setup, perhaps glass in the windows, a bad polygon or a polygons with inverse normals ...)

Wow! The refresh is so fast, this is amazing! And the new Maping options (cylindrical, sherical, etc.) are really neat. Super usefull. Would be great to have a "override UV" button on the pannel as any existing UV prevents the use of this non UV mapping mode.
I was thinking, (no connection to your last post) would It be possible to have an AO opacity option in the DL pannel? Or even the ability to choose Its color?

can we disable the preview window, and just have the progress bar and above,

I think that would free up some video card ram???

:)

Disable the preview window is not going to free video card ram I think ... it doen't use OpenGL, it is only a buffer in CPU RAM.

Little animation test, perfect integration of Lightwave's native instances into the renderer.

Very nice. Octane renders so pretty. Makes me all giddy now that I have my Titan.
:!:
NOW, I can look at the standalone and figure out what's what. Thus, no textures.
But I tell ya, Octane has improved my LW skills as I've learned: my renders there are so much better. Still, though, the speed and Photographic-Look that Octane offers is just ... special.

Seems the trade-off of the speed is having to resurface. I ain't complainin', just notin'.
