Simon - thanks for the update - looking forward to having a play with the new features.

Is there any action we should take regarding CUDA 8? Update card drivers?

Triplanar mapping ...wow. Looking forward to learning it.
Any driver of version >376.51 should work, but drivers of version >369.30 will work probably, too

Mesh compilation questions

Hi Simon,

Wondering:

Is there anything in the works to help speed up Mesh Compilation?

Using the SubD settings really slows Mesh Compilation and general updating. So, even though I like the SubD outcome, working with it
enabled is not good. Possibly using it for renders only could work, but it easily doubles render time.

Is Mesh compilation a CPU or GPU issue?

thanks,
Rick

Hi all, must say its great to be back and loving how much OR4C has developed (Well done Sighman :D )...

I am spending the afternoon catching up but am wondering...Is there an issue with live db items not applying for anyone? Mine just says 'applying' and does nothing :/

Hi,

Click "Apply", then click on the object/model in the OR Viewer. The object/model will then have the material you picked.

Best wishes,
Thomas

No, not that I am aware of.

As you observe. The octane SubD is done at compile time. It does use the gpu to do the math but it does affect mesh load time. It is more effective to use the SubD mechanism already built into Carrara since it will be applied to quads instead of triangles. However, it will still increase load times.
Is Mesh compilation a CPU or GPU issue?
Yes. SubD is done on Gpu. Compiling is done on cpu. Loading involves both.

Re: OctaneRender for Carrara 3.06.00.33[Stable] -batch queue

Hi Simon,
I tried to use Batch Render recently and had no luck.
Went to confirm my steps in the Carrara / Octane manual and cannot find them.
Task manager shows no Octane activity during my attempt.

I Used these steps:
load file into Batch Queue
designate format and destination
select Octane Renderer from drop down
Launch

Zilch. Can't get a first frame rendered. Just a blank frame appears and stays. Am I missing some basic step?

Thanks for your help,
Rick
