There is not a trivial algorithm to fast and effective check national symbols, and I don't want to abandon it, or users can get strange errors without understanding why it is... Max don't loves spaces in names (Octane already works with spaces, at least 2.49), and Octane don't loves national symbols...

Explosive mixture.

Better check it at beginning...

well since I use Octane I try not to use spaces nor "weird" characters. I've tried in a regular project placed in z:\blablalba that did have spaces in the max file name, since it gave me that error I created a new file in c:\temp\temp.max and gave the same error. Is max 2012 and you 1.32 script. I just used the render menu maxoctaner and also I tryed to use the run script, but doing that I didn't get even a menu or an error, just nothing happend
edit: sorry, in detail I just try to run your script thru the menu and the error pops up.
Scratch all, I figure it out, if I launch Max as administrator everything works so it has something to do with that and not my language

Thanks for the info on using the Esc key.I can confirm this works fine for killing the .bat file
I tried 1.32 and got a few other issues.
See Images attached
1) when i export the scene although there are a lot of separate mesh's in the scene, all with materials applied.it only exports as one mesh without any materials applied
2) when i select edit first frame in the exporter . It actually stops on every frame.Even though i have selected the force close of Octane after render.
Anyways i'll try 1.35 to see if these issues are cured.

2 is fixed in 1.35.
I think that
1 - is the case of export preferences, check the checkbox "
Ask export parameters" and try to set it first... Then you can leave "
Ask export parameters" unchecked...
