I'm holding out for illumination catching, too.

I posted this in the 1.01 thread, but it seems no one from Otoy reacted, so I post this question here aswell..

Shadow catcher matte is behaving a little weird. The diffuse color gets blended with the shadow. So if the diffuse material is red for example, you get black shadows with red fringe around. To avoid this you turn the diffuse black, but then the shadow gets mixed with black, and is twice as strong as it should be, so the solution is to then make the diffuse material also with 50% opacity.. But shouldn't the matte just be showing the shadow and nothing else, disregarding the diffuse color? I see that it might be handy some time to mix the diffuse color in there, but a shadow only switch would be nice next to the matte :)

Peter, I know when this happens.

Remove all mesh emitting diffuse materials from the obj and the problem will be gone.

This seems to be a little bug.
The new matte material option doesn't like mesh lights.

Hi all,

Really great stuff !!! One question, how split the shadows alone without see the model that drop shadows ?

For bypass the problem of colored shadows with mesh light, use the result as mask for compositing and not at just an overlay layer. give more control for ajusting the bg plate. Or use a camera mapping to project the data from plate on the plane card that recived shadows, to have the GI bleeding and shadows cast on the plate (need little colorimetric adjustement in comp to finsh the mix, so need ID material too).

Hi MattRM, you need to switch of alphashadows and then opacity on your model goes to 0. You still will have the shadows remain.

Great new feature, one which I've been waiting for eagerly

Question, does the shadow catcher material also have options for matte objects? This is as important for compositing.

Thanks

I just installed the latest 1.0 version, but the " matte" option kavorka mentioned is nowhere to be found!
Can anyone enlighten me?

Look at the very bottom of a diffuse material
