Can the standalone render hairs?
When you can answer this question, you can answer yourself...

This is the second time you've answered in this manner. The same answer you gave when I asked will the plugin render Grass or proxies. I mean this is 3DS Max - where many 3rd party render apps allow for this.

Many of us hardly use the standalone for these specific reasons. Reasons that may or may not help decide buy this product. Is it hard for you (or anyone for that matter) to simply say 'No it doesnt'?

Mabye because it should be clear, that the integrated version is the same as the standalone with the same features + to animate/link the most parameters?
It´s the same when you ask, if Octane then can render volumetric clouds/shadows, because max can...

On the technical side, grass/fur uses curves or 2point polygons and Octane can´t render curves or 2point polygons.

Having worked in software start-ups I know how difficult it can be to release things on time.

Now, if Refractive would consider a Christmas discount for all of us loyal beta users I think that would be well received and would help to pave over some of the ill feelings that some have. I don't think that longtime loyal beta users should end up paying a larger total (199 €) for having purchased the product in two parts (standalone + plug-in) than newcomers who only have to pay 174 € for the bundle. We've been in it for the long haul and I for one have highly recommended it to all the Max users I run into.

+ 10000000000000

Well said my friend well done.

face is right, you can answer most of your questions yourself this way, anything that you couldn't import to Octane just can't be done with this future plugin. If max can mesh it, OR will render it. And the material preview will show as a black ball for now. And you will not be able to use max maps such as gradient, turbulence, probably not even the bitmap map (so no tiling, offsetting, or map channels); point lights, spot lights, orthographic camera, none of that. I guess that Octane for max won't recognise other bitmap formats found in max, apart from the ones already supported by OR. Environment map, effects, atmosphere? I doubt it. These are wild guesses, but i think i might be spot on from a face-like rationale.

Still, it will be a much better experience than the standalone, by far. Timeline, multiple cameras you can actually save, lights you can move... networked rendering or so I heard (backburner?)

I am not sure how this works in Max but isn't it possible to mesh Hair with a "Convert Hair to Polygon" routine.
So it wouldn't be curves or 2sided polys in the end but you would still have some hair that moves dynamically. Of course that could create memory issues with really dense bunches of hair, but for many needs it could work.

in the meanwhile you can dream with Arion 1.5.1RC

What means? That if Refractive released the Max plugin today it could compete with Arion ad get a lot of new users and a lot of money.

Randomcontrol never annouce a date for a product, the same is valid for Chaos and Mental.

Let's start the race!

It will support stuff like "Hide from camera" object properties in max?
and also in the future it will support a matte material or similar ?

if rsl released the max plugin half a year ago, they'd make tons of money till now... just kidding.
"if" is a term that is utterly useless. the max plugin will come, people will buy & happily use it, case closed ;)

by the way, half of the shiny new features of arion are already there in octane. only arion costs 8 times more...

Sorry to say but Arion is useless.
I wanted to give it a try. I don't mind to use a couple of Renderers for different productions by the way.
Arion stopped importing my obj. file just half way done. Octane and Maxwell never complained with the scene.
Arion has probably serious issues with many materials (my scene had 160 materials).
Even for a beta that would be useless. Buying a tool and not be able to use it. That is useless.

Just my five cents on Arion.
