So far, I'm enjoying Iray's results. Kinda slow but then it loads the materials correctly.. Maybe that's why it's affecting the render time.
Another one important part I like about Iray, FINALLY spotlights with barn doors so it can be either unbiased or biased.
The way of setting up materials is totally different... *sigh*
The material setup is different, yes.
Also, my results all look like Octane's "Daylight kernel", in that I can't seem to get any good SSS going.
It could be just me, but everything coming out of iray looks kind of flat.
Can you explain how Iray comes out to be flat? I'm fairly sure we can tweak the light setup. So I can try toy with it on Iray and see what you mean.
Daylight... Daylight environment... Hmm, do you mean Direct Light Kernel? To tweak flat appearance, try to play with AO (Ambient Occlusion) distance in Direct Light kernel. I use Direct Light with AO and adjust AO distance, wow it renders much like PMC but much quicker and minimal noise (or none at all!).
More pro/con to mention:
Octane Render has render passes. Each layer will recognize other layer's lighting. That's a quite powerful tool. I have yet to master that... I don't know if Iray supports it.

It was my ignorance of something completely new.
Yes, I meant "Direct Light Kernel".
I also found a few things related to Iray in the content library for skin that, when applied, changed the attributes of the shader. There is "Iray Optimized Genesis 2 (Fe)Male MAT", along with other Iray enabled things. It worked out, and I was able to get SSS in ears/nose/etc.

Tried it on a few things. Seems to me like iray is awesomely better than nothing - but far far slower and less configurable than otoy. I absolutely require the speed. Thoughts? similar/different experiences?

In the DS beta thread on here some testers are reporting similar rendering speeds to OR. Maybe this depends on the scene and set up. If CPU/GPU are working together then this might speed things up compared to GPU alone?

On my system, Iray is at least as fast as Octane. I don't doubt that it might be slower on other machines though.
One thing you might try to get Octane-like speed in Iray is disabling CPU rendering in the Advanced Render Settings tab. I've heard word in another thread that some people are getting faster speed from Iray when it renders on just the GPU.

Does IRAY use the default DAZ shaders? Or is there a seperate material setup, similiar to the NGE of Octane?

They've secreted it away in the Off Topic forum.
