Update:
I downloaded the Octane files through my userpage (non-daily build) and this version works without any crashing. So, something between the files in the user page and the daily build is causing problems with displacements and the rendertarget. I wish I could narrow this down further for you.
Another question: Is there a list of daily builds that you've put online so I can test whether or not these issues are limited to 2.6.1 - 15/Aug/2014? This way, I'd be able to tell you if the crashing/instability is a result of a change between two timeframes.

Nope, sorry, I don't have here a copy of the old daily build .zip files. Of course I have the source code history, but not the compiled .zip files. But yes, it is a good idea to store all the daily builds in the Otoy server to make this kind of tests, I will do it for the next releases.
Anyway, be sure that you are updating the Octane.dll and Octane.dat files from the .zip file.
Could be possible for you to install a clean LightWave 11.6.3 version and try the plugin on it? ... perhaps we have a problem with the config files, or even with LW 11.6.1 (I make all my tests here with LW 11.6.3).

My latest tests were on a clean install of Lightwave 11.6.3. I started with the latest daily build of octane; that version yielded crashing and instability with displacements and with the render target nodes.
I then replaced all of the Octane files (in the bin directory, in configs, and the .P file) with the Octane release build in the Otoy website downloads section and that version does not have the same issues.

Weird, nobody else reports this kind of problem. I am now updating the NVIDIA drivers to the last ones to make some test here to see if I can reproduce the problem in my laptop.
Does anyone else have this problem with the last build?

No problems as yet with environments or displacements but I've not tried masking displacements. Ryan if you could upload a sample scene I'd be happy to test.

Test scene. Again, this scene is broken in the latest build for me, but not for the "release" build. If I zoom out at all in the IPR window, or attempt to render, or attempt to plug in an environment node, it crashes my video card and closes Lightwave.

Whoa.. that's one messed up scene!
Scene loaded ok. First thing I did was try and zoom in on the IPR window. IPR was unresponsive. It did show a render but I was unable to zoom or pan, IPR seems like it's frozen. Tried going to IPR perspective mode.. wouldn't let me. Black screen then Geforce driver crashed and recovered. Geforce driver crashes repeatedly as I tried navigating the scene in IPR perspective mode. Closed lightwave and reopened the scene. Repeated what I did before and BSOD, damn haven't had one of those in a long time.
I'm afraid to test further (but I probably will anyway;)
Nice job totally breaking Octane!

Juanjo's right, the high level of displacement has something to do with this.
I loaded the scene again, but set the disp. detail level to 512 and the amount to 0.001. Now IPR works I can move the camera around, and IPR perspective navigating worked too, but only for a minute. (hey better than nothing) Nvidia driver crashed again.
Remove the displacement node and everything is fine. Tried adding a sky environment, then a hdri environment.. all works fine as long as your not using displacement.

I think problem is tied to the Mesh. I can safely say the octane node material is fine. I created a sphere with it's own UV map and copied your material onto my sphere. Maxxed out the displacement and no issues at all. I've attached a version of your scene with my swami ball for you to check
Also I tried modifying your wetsuit guy model but bringing it into modeller, UN subpatching it, tripled an Ngons and saved out a copy. Tried that in octane and it was actually worse.. crashed on min displacement values immediately.
