I'm VERY excited about 1080TI and won't let someone w/unrealistic expectations smother my joy.

Moore's law is dead so until we have a different processor paradigm 20-40% faster is a big deal. A VERY big deal, imo.

In addition to the core improvement there is an additional 10% gain using 1080TI w/hybrid or water cooling w/overclock. Then add in adaptive sampling and I'm ready to cook some pixels.

And...we may yet get some optimization on Pascal from Otoy. My hope anyway.

If someone needs real-time then look for Brigade and ORC.

For now, all we need is AMD gpu support! Cause without doobt, AMD new pro gpu's will be more competitive...

There's only so much Otoy can do on that front.

AMD doesn't see that committed to supporting OpenCL and CUDA is (for now) quite propreitary.

Comparing 980Ti to 1080Ti in this scene with 80sec/61sec.. that is 33% better performance for the 1080Ti,
so relatively in the OctaneBench the 1080Ti could virtualy score167 (looking at he average scores).
So it still does not beat the 'boss'.. . the one and only Maxwell Titan Z, (in fact two)

I am just reading the thread and have to say we are experiencing just the opposite for the 1080TI. These are the biggest jump for any card we have seen so far. We started with the GTX 570 a long time back and went pretty much through all the releases from Nvidia, usually seeing 5 - 15 % improvements, but for once this has been quiet a big jump. We don't really trust the benchmark, so we usually run test renders and after getting our first 1080TI in yesterday did just some real world tests with one frame of all artificial light pathtracing. It took 3min 43s on one the Superclocked 1080 and only 2min 43s on the factory clocked 1080TI. That's pretty much a 35% increase - we thought that was quiet remarkable, especially considering that they are the same price.

And yes, in benchmark the results are not that big of a jump, basically going from 124 to 155, so really only 23% increase. We rendered test frames for hours and pretty much consistently showed a 30% - 35% increase.

Yes, 30 to 35% is what expected for the 1080Ti over the 1080 depending on the size and time to render.
For fast time render (small image) my 980Ti perform better or on par with my 1080 (Gigabyte G1). And I think the 1080ti could be better if you render bigger size.
That means in 2 months, when the price would drop, the king (speed/energy efficiency/VRAM/single slot (Watercooled)) will be the 1080ti !

I've just put my 1080 Ti FE in my computer. I will watercool and OC it next week but I was still curious how it compared to my OC'd 980 Ti's right out of the box.

The scene is 1920x1080, with lots of DOF. Using Directlighting kernel..
A still frame on the 980 Ti took 02:03. And with the 1080 Ti that time was down to 1:35.

I'd say that is a very good result. With proper OC (2.1ghz) applied it will run circles around my 980 Ti's.

went over 200 in OctaneBench with Founders Edition 1080Ti a day ago & the other Guy pushed over 213 (with the same OC settings). Leaving the copy/pasted text from the post:

Memory Clock +555 (leading to 5562)

** the reason for later is to keep card as cool as possible (it would work on 75%, but fail on 50%), under full load it went up to 55C. If I slow the fan speed & temperature rise, somewhere between 70-80C card starts to throttle down (even if temperature limit is still set at 84C), lowering it's core clock & eventually fail (meaning that You need to reboot computer in order to run card at all).

So Tom, what is the highest 980Ti with OC you have seen? I've never OC'd, and may never, but good info to have, for comparison.
