acc24ex wrote:will you do a proper material conversion from 2 to 3 - I know there's a script - but I've got few hundred projects, from last year alone - and not sure if I'm the only one, but you should make a proper converter - like there's one from vray to octane, why not make octane 2 to octane 3..
.. is this asking for too much, am I whining?
- I was here supporting octane from 2010., been in the 3dmax alpha testing - people ask me about octane 3 - and I tell them it's still buggy and the converter from 2 to 3 is non existant... and it will take me at least a year until it's bug free and me wishing to convert entirely
- am I whiny, or am I realistic - I'm still on 2.21 for that reason alone, as I'm working in production with octane, and it's critical that it's stable, and running fine ..
- the benefit of having a converter from 2 to 3 means you will get more positive reviews from "veteran" users like me, who's opinions might matter from marketing point of view..
- I'm learning this marketing thing can eat you up if you don't appease to your users (buyers) - one bad review can end up a large reach, and you end up loosing hundreds of users ...
- so make users happy, you will have money - please tell that to your bosses - and make them hire more people and get serious with it, you developers are doing the best you can.. but I can tell you need a lot more helpe - a lot, if you want to make this explode ..
- also you were supposed to do a keyshot like app from the start, it's still not there - even though I'm all hardcore deep into octane, I wouldn't mind a noob user interface if it enables me to quickly finish a project - also it will open up new markets, for real noobs - there are people I would recommend octane to, but since I know it's limitations, I say use keyshot - which costs 2-3 times more ..
- otoy CTOs CEOs whatever, get off your ass, and do this right, people are already using other options - and there seem to be plenty going on ..
- I did buy the 3.0 upgrade, but I'm not gonna use it for months probably - as I said, I use it for production, and a single day missed by plugin not working is simply not an option any more, I was there testing, and discovering bugs, and been patient...
- now I'm working, and you should too - do the rock solid version we were waiting for - or go home?
.. make the users think you're listening to them, it will result in $$$$ - it's really simple ..
btw I'm working in a startup that has 5-6 people just working customer care, answering phones and emailing customers, and 20-30 developers working on a single application, ios and android, debugging, upgrading, releasing daily - and this is like 10% technical as otoy/octane is - (health tracking app with appropriate hardware) 50 people working on that alone, upgrading web site, making changes all the time
- btw those banners you have on you web site are appalling - are you serious - I could have don those for free, or if you asked anyone in the forum
https://home.otoy.com/render/octane-render/
Are you f-ing Kiddin me? Guys, if noone told you yet - this banner is seriously low end amateur hour - if you had this in your portfolio I wouldn't hire you
What's going on, please tell me? How did you manage to do that - low resolution texture on a way low end render, from a company that's supposed to be a revolution in render engine - please fix this!
Not for my sake - but yours.
.. also not sure why, but forum didn't seem to get any more popular in the 5 years it's up.. not that much posts or replies .. ?
- these things are critical to any company, there will be just that much angry posts until you get no posts at all (I'm pretty much on the verge - )
- you get guys like beeple having 2-3 thousands likes per post, but instead you hire banglades/iranin script kids to market your facebook page - I haven't checked anything there in years .. how about pay the guy for a single mention of octane - or others who use it daily and swear by it .. they are called influencers - use it
- there's no quick marketing, it's dedication to users and product - you have to love us in all out whiny shitty posts like this one ..
- finally - I do mean well, I want you to succeed
Bla blaazen wrote:Regarding the converter, we have confirmed that direct conversion from 2.x to 3.x works (on another note, scenes done with a 2.25 plugin opens in v3 correctly as well). Eliminating edge cases remains a primary focus (as mentioned previously on the thread). Issues caused by certain texture file paths has been eliminated, and the problems with V-Ray converted scenes is getting fixed now. Processing times for batch renders is also being improved, and I'm working on specific edge cases provided by individual users. I'm currently putting together some updated materials (video, docs write-up, and updated application) for QA to share with the users, and will go into greater detail in a post that will coincide with it.
Currently, making the plugin, as well as it's external dependencies (i.e. the standalone) is indeed the current focus of our on-going efforts. As stated by Jim on this forum, a bug in v3 Standalone needs to be resolved before new features and fixes can be reliably tested. It is clear that an on-going conversation needs to be maintained on our end for our users, though we will continue to keep users in the loop on significant advances in our work.
We are open to suggestions regarding improvements to the Octane user experience. This will likely be a matter for the Standalone (which will in turn set the standard for this our other plugins). Where this stands in terms of priority will depend on user demand across all of our user bases.
The need for more developers have been heard loud and clear. The skill-set needed for this kind of development is distinct, and the rate at which our numbers are growing reflects this. Our team is growing, and OTOY is working hard at accelerating this process.
Social media and web design isn't an area I'm involved in. There isn't anything I can comment on in that regard, I'm afraid.
Thank you for your input, and apologies to you and all of our users for the inconveniences you have endured. Our efforts are not only for resolving issues in the here and now, but also for laying a long-term foundation for mitigating such issues in the future - the kind that can often come when dealing in bleeding edge software. This has resulted in delays and periods of radio silence, and in fairness this is not acceptable.
