I agree on Titan reference coolers. They're not only efficient but also beautifully designed. The only thing that tops a classic Titan for me is a Titan with some of EKWB's waterblocks (ok EVGA have some nice ones too). I love that slim look. Titan Z is uuuugly. Bloated. Self conscious. Insecure. Overweight. Overpriced.

p.s. EVGA is bringing HydroCopper'ed TitanZ - though I don't really want to hear the price =DDD

the good part that it's going to be 2 slot design (with that waterblock) so in theory, now You can stuff four of them into like relativelly cheep mobo, but well, the cards alone is like 12k$+ (probably the system would cost like 15k) - that's much. On the other side, considering all this power is going to sit in a regular ATX case..

You'd need a regular ATX case that can also hold two PSU's and enough radiators to cool all those cards. So probably a pretty monster case, but still not the server rack you'd normally need to contain processing power like that.

Exciting, but GTX Titan Z is 90% overpriced when calulating renderspeed.
(roughly you can say: 2700 euro for one Titan Z has 700 mhz and for that price you buy 3Titans (1,5x cores) with 900 mhz.)
I.e. If I could and would like to spent a lot of money I still would not buy Titans Z and I would rather build two rigs of 4 regular Titans instead of one rig of 4 Titans Z and then render over network. Looks like the Titans Z are not interesting for Octane, but Maybe the Titans Z are interesting for gaming?

nVidia try to brand this out as entry level, sort of ultimate computing card on the budget (compared to Teslas is cheap) - It actually have very good DP performance. As for gamers this will find a place in very high end boutique builds for those who are looking to run games at 4k with multiple screens (like 3x4k monitors) & where money isn't such much of an issue.


..but overall, I fully agree with You - If that would be my money I'd rather build 4x780(6gb) rigs stuffed with water colling instead of spending money for TitanZs..

..unless it will be very power efficient (we don't know yet for sure). It might come a surprise if effiency will be so good that the card will pay for itself over two Titan (blacks) with electricity savings taken into account. Let's wait for some benchmarks & then try to compare..

Nice article (my only comment would be I really like seeing dates on blogs, particularly involving tech). I just can't agree that the Titan Z is beautiful. I think it's a bloated, out of proportion design, full of hot air (pun intended), just like the marketing campaign.

The original Titan design seemed to be a leap forward. I guess we're stuck with a bit of iteration before the next revelation (5k cuda cores with 12Gb ram @ 150W anyone? Two slots wide please...)

It doesn't mean all that much, but the TDP for the Titan Z (according to EVGAs website) is 375W. Considering it's 250W for a single Titan Black, that has the potential to be a noticeable power savings as you add up cards (when you consider both the electricity needed to power the cards and for air conditioning).

it will be interesting to take make some calculations, when we have all the data:

let's say:

4xTitansBlacks+System+Electricity
vs.
4x780(6gb)+System+Electricity
vs.
2xTitanZ+System+Electricity

for something that would take 1 Year continuous 100% workload 24/7
(780 & TZ's rigs would need longer to render,
but maybe last system will come least expensive on a long run..)

It doesn't matter for those hobbyists having one system,
but might matter for those having animation projects in the house
& planing to buy tens of Titans =)
