Hi, what modelling package are you using for export? I am using Blender (2.60) and each time I tried to import a mesh in to Octane (DEMO, still waiting for my after sales info regarding full beta download) it would crash! I messed around with the export settings in Blender with varied results. The "fix" for me was that face that I was being dumb
Put simply, I was exporting my mesh without adding ANY materials to the object. Soon as I added default materials, Octane imported fine
