Hi guys,
the devs have introduced a new experimental feature in Standalone 2025.1 named
Octane Server:
There is still a lot of work to do, but it seems very promising!
Quoting from 2025.1-Beta1 discussion:
We stopped the development of headless network rendering based on the existing network rendering architecture a while ago, because these days Octane needs the GPU for a lot more things than just path-tracing and it would make it very hard to manage all the additional data transfers that are required to make that work remotely. We may still continue the development in the future, but it doesn't have priority right now.
However, the OctaneServer is an alternative approach that transfers the source data to another process, which can be remote and thus should allow headless network rendering relatively easily. For now I see this as the more manageable way to implement the concept of headless network rendering.
Happy GPU rendering!
ciao,
Beppe

I don’t understand how this new server thing is different than the Network rendering we now have. Maybe when I try the Octane 2025 Beta I might get a better picture of what it’s about.
Regardless: can and will it be able to allow an iPad Pro M4 (and whatever comes next) to contribute to a render job started from another machine. And will it also allow cross platform network rendering?
After using my new iPad Pro 13” M4 I have developed a renewed interest in working on Macs again. Seriously thinking about getting a new Mac Mini M4 Pro or two. This might save me the trouble next year of trying to buy what will most likely be an even more expansive (or comparable cost depending on Mac Mini upgrades) RTX 5090 (upgrading from 3090 and 3080 Ti). 20 Core GPU with up to 64 Gb memory in such a small low power unit is highly attractive. But I’d certainly like to see more real world testing with these machines - especially how they currently compare with RTX 4090.

Can you expand on the network server rendering …that wasnt too clear …those on macs used this a ton with pcs with rtx cards …also blender …where the heck is the paid mac version so we can get this up and running again. - I’m feeling like a fish out of water having swapped from cinema 4D where this all worked to blender where it seems like there’s just no solution on the Mac!

@zantell1:
please write to help at otoy dot com asking for Beppe!
You are the first one reporting this, and I need to investigate.
@cjadams:
Octane Server new feature is under development and works only for Windows for now.
And it is not an alternative to Network Rendering, but to Headless rendering (the possibility to run OctaneRender® on machines without a supported GPU).
Blender plugin does have an Octane Server but it only works for the license, due to particular open source nature of Blender.
About Blender issues, sorry, I'm not a Blender user.
Please ask on the forum here:
viewforum.php?f=32
Or at least, write to help at otoy com, thanks.
ciao,
Beppe

Sorry but i don’t seem to have access to the blender forums.. i have a ticket in right now for that.. in the mean time.. are you telling me that there is a version of octane that can do network rendering on blender with a PC with RTX card in it from the mac as the main user machine? - I already am a paid octane studio subscriber. and had this all working fine with C4d….but seems this is missing or i can’t find the right combo of downloads for blender to replicate this setup.
1 - Can you confirm i can use octane and blender on the mac and network rendering to the the PC with an rtx card in it.. like i did with C4d?

Ok, you need Blender Octane 2024.1 -29.16 version for macOS:

Here are the direct links to Blender Octane 29.16:
https://render.otoy.com/plugindownloads ... stable.zip
And to corresponding Blender Octane Server:

Then you can find Network Rendering preferences here:
