Can anyone else confirm somewhere around a 10% decrease in performance?

And are we supposed to be using that same benchmark scene (which I think is from 2010)?
(yes - I do understand that changing the scene would defeat (at least one) purpose... I just
want to be sure I am using the right one nonetheless) ;)
Ok, I had a look and the problem is that in 1.01 and 1.02 the glossy material in the (old) benchmark scene gets loaded with an IOR of 1.3 (which is wrong), while 1.0, 1.03, 1.04 and 1.05 load the material with an IOR of 0 (which is correct). Loading it with an IOR 1.3 reduce the specularity a lot, which means that less bounces will be traced and it renders faster. Obviously the rendered image looks fairly different:

IOR of 0.0:
ior_0.0.png
IOR of 1.3:
ior_1.3.png
To see how things actually changed over the last releases I ran the benchmark through all 6 versions with both IORs and these are the results on my GTX 690 (using both GPUs):

Code: Select all

version | IOR 0.0 | IOR 1.3
---------+-----------+---------
 1.00 | 22.7 | 27.2
 1.01 | 21.8 | 26.3
 1.02 | 22.7 | 27.2
 1.03 | 22.7 | 27.2
 1.04 | 22.3 | 26.8
 1.05 | 22.3 | 26.8
You can see that beside a little speed drop between 1.03 and 1.04 nothing really happened. We will have a look into that drop, but out of the top of my head there haven't really been any changes that directly affect render speed in the benchmark scene.

Conclusion: Always check that your benchmark result is the same, when you compare those. And if you want to speed up stuff, try to tweak your scene, often you can improve things a lot this way.

Cheers,
Marcus

PS: And yes, the grass is always greener over there ... ;)

Lately I was able to test some different hardware.

I must say that K5000 viewport performace is perfect. With low power consumption I works at 60°C at full power.
For me apart from its durability, Tesla 2075 is not bang for the buck.
GTX 680 outperforms all. I haven't used the 680

Here are the scores.

Code: Select all

Benchmark scene: Octane Version 1.05
IOR 1.0

GPUs PT | DL | PMC
-----------------+--------+--------+-------
EVGA GTX 680 4GB| 3,16 | 11,60 | 2,62
ZOTAC GTX 465 1GB| 1,89 | 6,53 | 1,48
TESLA M2075 | 2,75 | 7,79 | 1,92
PNY QUADRO K5000 | 2,52 | 8,82 | 2,07
-------------------------------------------
DUAL SETUP
-------------------------------------------
K5000 + GTX680 | 5,04 | 20,20 | 4,10
TESLA + GTX680 | 5,48 | 19,23 | 4,21
GTX680 + GTX 465 | 5,21 | 18,81 | 4,17
-------------------------------------------

ECC is off in both Quadro and Tesla

OctaneRender 1.10
Path_Tracing/No no alpha shadows : 7.77 M/s

OctaneRender 1.00
Path_Tracing/No no alpha shadows : 7.65 M/s

2 x 580GTX Gigabyte.

Advice needed : I would like to add a GPU on another PC for octane. For the same price (210€) I could have a 660Ti (New) or 580GTX Gigabyte (used).

Just installed the upgraded PSU and EVGA GTX680 Classified today. Stock speeds. Will start tweaking the card once I know everything is stable. It's great to finally be able to use Octane properly and start to incorporate it into my workflow!

Gives me a warm fuzzy feeling that my two $100 GTX460's are faster than a $500 GTX680... of course,
these are taking up two double-slots... but still... 460's, 470's, 570's... are still mighty powerful and
dirt friggin' cheap on eBay, craigslist etc...

;)

I couldn't fit more than one double slot card in the current rig (and keep a separate display card). Next rig will have multiple GPUs. This is enough for me to get a workflow going while I learn Octane!

Yes, this old babes are very "strong" for octane, but lack of memories and eat more power.
I have 2x580 1.5GB and always reach full memory. I'm checking for a 670GTX with 4GB.

True.. true.. as I mention in a couple other threads, I have maxed out a couple times - both when doing
spread res 17x11.. but otherwise, I have not had mem problems. But I have a habit of making very optimized
geos and textures.. between ZB and LW, I may be making stuff that is a fraction the polys of other folk... this
likely makes me an odd-man-out.

I have no doubt that I am going to end up with 3 or 4 670's or 680's though... I am a professional after all.. and
this is a business... so I will just have to bite my lip, dust off my wallet (I am probably the cheapest dude in the
Octane forums, right?) and plunk down some serious dough when I build my next beast.. tentatively this summer.
And yes, they will prolly be new... d'oh!
