The HDRI environment setup in your screenshot is wrong, that's all I'm saying. If it's setup that way the litghtsource in that HDRI is not just really really strong, it's super EXTREMELY strong causing a extremely high contrast.
This is what happens to high values (sun/sky) in HDRI when Gamma is changed from 1. They get much much more intense than shadows.

Also, since everything works fine with area lights, as you say, that means there's nothing wrong with materials.
I don't see anything
that much wrong with materials in V4.
Cheers
Milan

Hi Milan,
Thanks a lot for the added clarification. That definitely helped me to look at the Octane HDRI environment again. I think I solved the issue now.
That's when happens when I just add the HDRI with a material that has even the slightest amount of roughness - burnt out highlights:
In this instance, the HDRI uses the embedded colour profile.
If I change the colour profile to linear however...
...the problem is gone.
So changing the colour profile fixed it, which I guess is what you meant by me using the wrong gamma - so thanks again!
The weird thing is though, that I never had to do that in v3.08 or earlier and I am using literally the same HDRIs and lighting setups.
Well, you live and learn!

We are getting a Hard Computer Crash when using Denoiser.
Win 10 Pro - R20 - v4 - Network Render ON
Beauty Pass - ON
Denoiser - ON
Completion - ON
-CRASH-
Beauty Pass - OFF
Denoiser - ON
Completion - ON

Beauty Pass - OFF
Denoiser - ON
Completion - OFF

-NO CRASH-
Is there a log I can get you somewhere?

You should never use BITMAP of C4D. You're losing the flexibility/color depth and quality of ImageTexture node if you do this for some cases.
If It works with "linear" you could get same results with IMAGETEXTURES while have GAMMA=1.0 in node.

Have you read RED texts in first page of this topic? It will give you direction what to do in this case.

I did, No VRAM issue, using a 1070 Ti
NO PSU issue, only using 1 GPU
OOC is set to 6GB
Can't pull a bug report or screenshot or video since it is a hard crash & restarts the computer.

It'll take the system down but in a weird way, not a flat out KP. Eg high-res still renders will reach the max samples but wont complete. It keeps rendering and never stops. If you stop the render manually Cinema hangs. A normal force quit seems to work BUT after you do apps will fail to launch: everything just bounces in the dock and you have to reboot. One time after force quitting Cinema's icon remained in the dock. its wasn't listed in top so I couldn't even find the PID to kill it. Again reboot required. It's very disturbing...
Also seeing a lot of general crashes/spinning beachball when doing routine iterative work with the LV active (crashes only happens when LV is running) and it requires a force quit (but those don't take down the system at least). Again this is all with R20.
I do not get this behaviour with R19 and V3.08. With the same scenes it renders fine.
What's crashes? C4D crash with warning window or Render Failure with red texts?
Where's bugreports?
What happen without eGPU?
Give more info for what you render? Scene's itself or resolution, settings, etc...?

Hard crash is low level problem. Stability issue.

The entire comeputer crashes and restarts
we did not get this behaviour on R20 with 3.08
No eGPU
500 samples very low, we rendered a cube plane and light and with beauty pass on it hard crashed the system,.

using a simple plain, cube & light with Beauty pass on, no crash
using a simple plain, cube & light with Beauty pass on & Network Render, hard crash.
No errors appear on the Network Machine.
I could not recreate this issue on my mac, we don't have another PC to test on.
UPDATE: It seems to happen when SLAVES are stolen mid-render. If we grab Slaves before render starts it doesn't seem to crash.
