I'm trying to explain it. It's my best, you'll see the reason if you read again.

Michael, Ahmet has explained that the Mix node in your graph precedes the Image Texture nodes before they are connected to the Environment node, which prevents the UI sliders from passing along the information to the transform node. I explained in my previous post that you can get around this limitation by adding transform nodes to the Image Texture nodes and inputting the values directly to those nodes instead.

Michael, I amend my previous comment. It appears as if all channels but all rotation transforms but ROTZ are being ignored if you insert any node in between the Image Texture node and the Environment node. Please feel free to file a ticket at

Thanks, but I honestly can't tell from this thread what doesn't work because it isn't supposed to work vs what doesn't work that is supposed to work, so I wouldn't know where to start. Also, no one has commented on the fact that even rotating the sky object itself does not work. Is that a bug too, or also not supposed to work?

I still love Octane Render though...

Hi MichaelJeffreyVance,
Ahmet has explained why it is not working.
The workaround is simple, just change the Projection from UV Mesh to Spherical. and use the RY value to rotate the HDR:

A late reply, but this was annoying me and this thread is the first result in google, so figured I'd throw the answer here:
Create a null
Place the null inside the octane sky
Select the octane environment tag on the sky object
Add the hdr you want to use to the texture slot
Click the node icon at the bottom to open the node graph
select the image texture node
click the projection button to add a projection node
Change this from uv to spherical
You should see there is a blank untitled link field on the projection node's settings. Drag and drop your null object into this box. You can now rotate the null object inside the sky in 3D. You must always keep the sky object zero'd out or it breaks. It should end up looking like this:
