We have been testing your scene with the latest 2020.1.4 build as well as 2019.1.5 and could in fact experience the performance drop you are talking about.

We will be looking into some optimizations to be able to bring the old performance back soon, in the meantime there is a workaround that might be useful: if you limit the amount of dirt nodes per material tree to just a single one the performance should be pretty much the same if not equal to that you saw in 2019.

Hope that helps.
Hey Mojave

This is wonderful news. Unfortunately limiting dirt nodes mean limiting control and detail so I cant go down that route. Looking forward to a speed increase (fingers crossed!). As I mentioned above....even a legacy 2019 option would be fine as an addition.

Thanks for your reply though, keen to hear if you uncover anything!

Hi Aaron,

After some investigation I have noticed that the scene you shared was affected by an issue in Octane 2019 which would cause just the first dirt texture to be evaluated when used in composite materials. This was wrong but as a side effect you would experience better performance than you should.

This problem was fixed in version 2021.1. This results in longer render times since different dirt node settings require separate evaluation as expected. Good news is that in 2020.2 RTX support for dirt has been introduced which improves the performance of these scenarios to numbers similar or better than what you had before 2020.1.

I hope that helps.
